This Learner Guide / Assessment Workbook BSBINM601-Manage knowledge and information contain details of your assessment work and the guidelines for you to be able to complete it.
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and maintain information processing systems to support decision making; and to optimise the use of knowledge and learning throughout the organisation.It applies to individuals who are responsible for ensuring that critical knowledge and information are readily available to review the organisation’s performance and to ensure its effective functioning. It applies to a wide range of knowledge and information such as business performance data, customer feedback, statistical data and financial data.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

For you to achieve competency in this unit, you are required to complete the following tasks and submit on the due date specified in your Training Plan. You must achieve satisfactory ratings on all tasks. Your Assessment Task must be submitted in print form.

For each submission of your Assessment Task, you are to fill up the Assessment Cover Sheet and ensure that it is completely and accurately filled up. The Trainer / Assessor or Empire Institute of Education (EIE) representative will provide you with submission receipt to evidence that you have handed over your Assessment Task.Upon completion of the Unit Assessments, the Trainer/Assessor will mark the Assessment Tasks and accomplish a Unit Assessment Summary Sheet to record the result and feedback. Your Trainer/ Assessor will discuss these with you and thereafter you will be asked to sign the declaration to evidence the feedback session.
If the result of your Unit Assessment is “Not yet Competent (NYC)”, you will be given an opportunity for re-assessment. You will only work on the component/s of the Task/s that were marked “Not satisfactory”. The re-assessment must be completed within one (1) study period. Please note that EIE will provide two (2) chances for re-assessment at no cost.Should you not be able to achieve competency with all of these opportunities, you are required to repeat the unit at your own cost which will also impact on your extension of study period.
If you have special needs or disabilities, reasonable adjustment will be organized in accordance with the Special Needs / Disabilities Policy and Procedure of EIE. This may include but not limited to:

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
give examples of existing and emerging technologies and how they can be used in knowledge and information management
explain statistical analysis and other quantitative methods commonly used in decision making including several of:
long-term trend analyses
short to medium-term trend analyses
outline the key features of management information systems and decision support systems
explain how to utilise risk management plans to determine acceptable courses of action.

You need to allocate 2 – 4 hours to complete this assessment task in your own time.
Assessment due in last week of your term. Any variations to this arrangement must be approved in writing by your assessor.
Instructions to the candidate:
All questions must be answered satisfactorily for Task 1 to be completed satisfactorily.
There is no restriction on the length of the question responses, or time restriction in completing the assessment.
You must complete all questions unassisted by the assessor or other personnel, but may refer to reference material as needed.
You will demonstrate a sound knowledge of the unit requirements in your responses.
Question 1: What are the key features of a knowledge management system (KMS)?Question 2: List some strategies for measuring the effectiveness of the KMS in meeting organisational objectives.Question 3: Provide examples of adjustments that might be required to a KMS to meet organisational objectives, policies and procedures, and legislation. Question 4: Describe a range of existing and emerging technologies used in knowledge and information management that ensure optimum efficiency and quality. Question 5: Identify at least two types of business problems/issues that an organisation may experience. Describe a process for analysing business problems or issues. Question 6: How should information be tested for reliability? For validity? And for sufficiency? Question 8: List the steps involved in reviewing data from staff feedback. Question 9: Explain what statistical analysis is and the steps in conducting a statistical analysis. a communication plan that determines how you will disseminate information internally to management and staff about the issue or problem ((template provided – Appendix 2)
In this project, you need to provide examples of your work or of a company you are familiar with, while managing knowledge and information. The focus is on sourcing and analysing information to respond to a particular issue or problem, and making and communicating a decision using a well-managed information management system.Complete these tasks.
Using the chosen organisation’s information action plan template (you can use the template provided in Appendix 1), develop an action plan to collect data from staff and customers to address an organisation issue or problem. For the issue or problem, make sure that you:
clarify the objectives and steps to take
determine the information you require
identify the sources of the information, including relevant research conducted via the internet, journals, articles and so on
clarify the methods used to collect the data
describe what steps to take to test the data collection methods and results for sufficiency, validity and reliability.
Collect data from staff and customers to address the organisation issue or problem. Analyse the data collected and prepare a report that outlines:
the original objective
how you reviewed and analysed the data to identify any trends or emerging patterns and the cause and effect of the organisational issue or problem
the range of methods selected for presenting the findings in a report
the findings, using the selected methods
emerging trends or patterns
whether you have sufficient and reliable information
new and innovative ideas from the results.
Use the organisation’s communication plan template to complete a communication plan that determines how you will disseminate information internally to management and staff about the issue or problem (you can use the template provided in Appendix 2). Make sure your plan adheres to any privacy and confidentiality policy requirements.

The candidate should demonstrate skills in developing and maintaining information processing systems to support decision-making; and optimising the use of knowledge and learning throughout the organisation.The candidate’s work performance will be documented while being observed by an assessor. This will be done in classroom under a simulated workplace environment.
The following observation checklist is used to judge and record observations of the candidate. The observation checklist has a series of items related to the unit of competency that form the evidence criteria.The checklist will allow the assessor to record that he/she has had the opportunity to observe the candidate applying these skills and knowledge. All items on the checklist must be observed in order to record a satisfactory performance.
