Extra Credit Assignment. This document contains descriptions of four research projects (A, B, C and D). These are all actual research projects that were funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). They were funded when I wrote up this concept for an extra credit assignment, about a year ago, but I haven’t checked to see if they are still active projects. These descriptions include my explanations (some of which are heavily simplified) and quotes from the award abstract. Please use the descriptions from this document, rather than the actual references. In this document, I deliberately gave these projects goofy titles, making them sound quite trivial. • (A) Reproductive organs in worms• (B) Trees in a faraway forest• (C) Tweaking the shape of bug wings• (D) When grasshoppers don’t have elbow room Don’t use plagiarized sources. Get Your Custom Essay on National science foundation (nsf) | Biology homework help Just from $13/Page Order Essay Despite the goofy titles that I gave them, all are serious projects intended to advance human knowledge. You’ll have to read the descriptions to appreciate why. All were reviewed by a panel of experts and are (or were) supported by taxpayer-funded grants. Based on the information given in the descriptions, and on information you learned in this class, form an opinion about the relative priority of each project. Decide which of these should be given the highest priority. In other words, if these four projects were under review for being cut, which one would you spare? Also, decide which of these should be given the lowest priority, and thus should be the first project cut, if funds become scarce. You’ll be asked to write two paragraphs.• Paragraph 1: Which project is the highest priority and why? Write a paragraph clearly stating your opinion about which of these projects should have the highest priority, among these four. Clearly stating an underlying rationale for your opinion. Why did you choose it, rather than the other projects, as your highest priority?• Paragraph 2: Which project is the lowest priority and why? Write a paragraph clearly stating your opinion about which of these projects should have the lowest priority, among these four. Clearly stating an underlying rationale for your opinion. Why did you choose it, rather than the other projects? As with all writing assignments in this course, your essay is expected to be in your own words. If you do quote anything, you should put the quoted material in quotation marks. If it is a longer quote, then you may indent the quoted text. Please note that this is not a research assignment. You should be able to get everything you need for this assignment from this document and your textbook. The grading rubric for this assignment is found on page 4 of this document. RESEARCH PROJECT DESCRIPTIONSA. Reproductive organs in worms. In the grant abstract, Mathies (2012) begins by noting that “how cells acquire their identity is a fundamental question in Developmental Biology”. He also makes the following observation. [This fundamental question is] one that has gained additional importance in the era of stem cell biology. In order to harness the potential of adult stem cells, the factors that give them their unique potential must be understood. This potential is intimately linked with their tissue of origin (Mathies, 2012).Mathies (2012) goes on to state that he is studying the development of the reproductive organs of the worm Caenorhabditis elegans as a “model system”. In other words, by studying the details of the development of these organs, he hopes to learn information that applies to the question of how organ identity is established in general, and not just for the reproductive organs and not just for this species. It is already known that the reproductive organs in C. elegans ultimately originate from two cells in the developing embryo. These two cells are called SGPs. Matheis makes the following observations about the SGPs:The SGPs undergo a series of cell divisions to generate five types of tissues in the female reproductive organ and four tissue types in the male reproductive organ. The potential to generate these particular cell types is imparted to the SGPs at their birth. A combination of molecular, biochemical, and genetic experiments will be used to incorporate newly identified genes into a genetic model for organ identity and to identify critical early regulators of SGP identity. According to Matheis, the project has the following significance. The outcome of this work will be a more complete understanding of the genetic controls of organ identity and multipotency, which has the potential to impact significantly the basic understanding of all stem cells, including human stem cells.B. Get Your Custom Essay on Systems of religion and politics Just from $13/Page Order Essay The popular story of men and women who are supernaturally powerful exists in every culture or religion. Yet, not all of them started off as paragons of human supremacy. Instead, the character develops through a set of events known as the hero’s journey. Make sure you read about this in detail in your assigned reading for the unit. Select a culture from the following list and a hero associated with that culture. Please select a culture different from your own, and take this opportunity to explore a tradition and a hero that may be unfamiliar to you. Abrahamic Religion: The Prophet Muhammad, Abraham, Noah, Moses, Jesus, Ruth, Ester, Sarah, Mary Aztec: Quetzalcoatl Celtic: King Arthur Egypt: Osiris, Thoth, Cleopatra, Nefertiti English: Beowulf, Robin Hood Greek: Achilles, Icarus Indian: Krishna, Rama, Ravana, Durga, Draupadi Japanese: Okuninushi, Susanoo, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto Mesopotamian: Gilgamesh, Enkidu, Utnapishtim Norse: Thor, Loki, Siegfried, Bödvar Bjarki Polynesian: Maui Popular Culture: Bruce Wayne, James “Logan” Howlett, Kal-El United States: John Henry, Paul Bunyan, Florence Nightingale, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman, Shirley Chisolm, Sojourner Truth Address the topics and questions listed in steps A and B below in the form of a well-organized paper. You must support your analysis using 2 credible sources from the AIU Library (use the attached for conducting the ). You must use APA reference and citation format for the sources you use to support your explanations and arguments. Be sure your submission includes a title page and reference page, and the length of your paper (not including the title and reference pages) must be at least 3 double-spaced pages. Part A: Complete a hero’s journey analysis of your chosen culture and figure based off pages 102 and 103 in Chapter 5 of the textbook. Part B: Discuss the significance of heroism and the characteristics of the selected hero to the origin country’s culture, such as careers, literature, music, religion, or art. Please provide 2 specific examples (e.g., Gilgamesh was King, Kal-El a reporter, Bunyan a woodsman). Identify 2 modern or historical examples of your heroic figure’s archetype, and describe their similarities and differences (e.g., Gilgamesh and King Arthur or Utnapishtim and Noah). In your opinion, based on your research, why do humans of all cultures crave the stories of these superhuman figures (e.g., humankind’s desire to explain existence).

Much of what we tend to focus on when we study social psychology are topics that often have a negative connotation such as conformity, prejudice, aggression or obedience. A huge component of the study of social psychology; however, focuses on prosocial behavior – behaviors that focus on compassion and helping others. For this activity, you will focus on this more uplifting aspect of social psychology. Topics that fall under the area of prosocial behavior include altruism, helping, bystander intervention, empathy, and compassion, among others. Don’t use plagiarized sources. Get Your Custom Essay on Psychology 101 | psychology | American Military University Just from $13/Page Order Essay For this exercise, pick one day and seek to structure your thoughts and behaviors entirely around helping others. With each interaction or action you take, pause to think and ask yourself “is there a way I might help another here?” Hold a door for someone, offer your seat, share a smile, give a sincere compliment, show empathy to another, attempt to be more patient or understanding, etc. Your efforts should be in social settings that involve interactions with others (rather than something such as donating to a charity for instance). The goal is to be as thoughtfully prosocial in your interactions throughout the day as possible. At the beginning of the day, jot down your general mood, feelings, attitude, etc. Then throughout the day, whenever possible, carry a small notebook with you or make notes in an app on your phone to jot down meaningful encounters or experiences as you attempt to engage in prosocial behaviors. At the end of the day, again reflect and take notes on how you feel, your general mood, feelings and attitudes, etc. In a 5-7 slide PowerPoint presentation, not counting title or reference slides: Summarize your experience. Describe the prosocial behaviors you engaged in, others’ reactions to these behaviors, and your assessment of any changes in mood, attitude, good fortune, or anything else of note you experienced. Review what you have learned about human behavior in social settings this week in your readings and CogBooks activities. Connect what you learned or experienced through your day of conscious, prosocial behavior with the terms, concepts, and theories from your research. Integrate at least two academic sources (your assigned readings/resources can comprise one of these sources), citing any references used in APA format. Describe any new insights you gained through this experience about your interactions with others on a daily basis, including any behaviors you wish to change or to continue. Use the features of PowerPoint to your advantage to communicate your ideas – include pictures, audio recorded narration, speaker’s notes, video, links, etc. as appropriate to enhance your ideas. Include an APA formatted title slide and reference slide. APA components such as an abstract, headings, etc. are not required since this is a PowerPoint presentation

Get Your Custom Essay on Hum 111 assignment 2 the project paper Just from $13/Page Order Essay The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are! Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic. For the topic you choose: Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed. While some of the topics tend to lend themselves toward particular writing genres, you are not restricted to the specific format suggested for the individual topic. For example, you may do an “interview,” a “proposal,” a “letter,” a “short story,” a “blog,” an “essay,” an “article,” or any other written genre for almost any of the topics. The project is intended to be fun as well as informative, so feel free to be creative with the delivery of your information. Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text. Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page. Note: Your instructor may require you to submit your topic choice for approval before the end of Week 2. Topic choices (pick 1): . Memorandum. Your boss, who knows you have been taking a humanities class since he pays for your tuition reimbursement, has tasked you with managing the art budget for your company, expecting you to choose various pieces of art for the new corporate offices. (Note: Replicas of the works are acceptable since they are more cost-efficient and you are working on a budget.) Include the following: 1. Identify three (3) examples of 19th century Impressionist painting or sculpture and three (3) Post-Impressionist works. Explain how the six (6) pieces of art fall into these two (2) styles. 2. In a memo, describe the appearance of your six (6) choices to your CEO so he or she will know what the art looks like and where it would be placed in the corporate offices. 3. Explain why each piece is considered to be historically significant. 4. Explain how each piece “fits” your company’s overall (or desired) corporate image. Keep in mind that a piece of art is supposed to “say” something about the owner, so describe what would these pieces of art say about your company. Speech. Your uncle’s birthday is in two (2) months, and everyone knows that he loves almost all kinds of music. As a birthday gift for him, you want to have a special piece of music composed in his honor which will be played at a family birthday celebration. Write a speech that you will make to the composer’s agent. Include the following: 1. Narrow your choices down to three (3) composers you’ve studied in this course. Choose one (1) of the composers and explain why you want him to write the “birthday present” music. 2. Explain why the other two (2) composers were ultimately not selected. 3. Specifically identify the musical elements in the composer’s style that you would like to be included in the new music written for your uncle. 4. Describe what sort of emotion is generated by listening to the works of your selected composer; in other words, what do you want your uncle to “feel” as he hears the music, and why is this composer so perfect for this composition? Questions Two Speeches by Mary Elizabeth Lease Who/what does Lease identify as the main enemy of the people? Why does she blame them? What does she say about overproduction of farm goods? Who does she blame for overproduction? Lease compares farmers to slaves in both passages. What does she say, and do you think this is an accurate comparison? Why/why not? What role did women play in the Farmer’s Alliance movement? Omaha Platform How are working men portrayed in the “platform?” Who are their enemies? Why do the Populists think silver is better than gold as a monetary system for the US? “Every Man a King” Who does Long identify as the cause of most of the problems in the country? Why? He talks about inherited wealth, but why do you think he does not talk about people who worked hard and became wealthy? What would he like every family to have in America? Why? What is Long’s solution to the problems he has identified? Comparing the documents: What are some of the similarities between the Lease/Omaha documents of the 1890s and Long in the 1930s? What are the main differences? Do you think that Long would have been a Populist if he was an adult in the 1890s? Why or why not?

Possible solutions to funding mental awareness programs: Having fund raisers Have big name stars participate in fund raisers Work on government funding Have groups think outside the box Get big corporations to become involved The solutions named above have pros and cons. In order to have fund raisers, there needs to be a dedicated person willing to give up their time to basically organize by making hundreds of phone calls, putting together a venue, a group of people willing to volunteer their time, organize tickets, advertising, be responsible for the funds collected, and having the ability to pull the entire event off within the laws of the government and state they are conducting the fund raisers. On the other hand, having fund raisers allows money to be generated and donated to raising mental awareness which in turn gives people the opportunity to recognize, understand, and benefit from information regarding mental illnesses. “Mental health awareness campaigns have yielded positive outcomes” (Srivastava, Chatterjee,
