Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Vocational Background This assignment will give you the opportunity to explore the evolving role of leaders and managers in the service industry. While completing this assignment you are to consider different aspects presented below and focus on the key challenges and obstacles facing leaders and managers in the service sector in terms of talent management. There has never been a more challenging time to be dealing with people matters in the hospitality and tourism sector. For some this brings considerable headaches, for others it presents exciting opportunities. Either way, it means sizable changes to the way businesses go about recruiting, retaining and developing their people. We embarked on this research to identify how large hospitality and tourism businesses are addressing rising costs, recruitment difficulties and changing employee attitudes in order to highlight innovative approaches and support employers across the sector in navigating these challenges. What the findings tells us is that a growing number of businesses are thinking long-term about their people, ensuring that their strategy underpins the wider businesses strategy, and that they need to be able to demonstrate a tangible return on their investment. As a result, businesses are increasingly looking at new approaches to retain their staff to drive productivity and performance. Businesses are at different stages of this journey and we want these insights to not only highlight the fundamental change in the way that employers are seeking to invest in their people, but also to stimulate and showcase examples of how businesses are tackling the common challenges and overcoming barriers along the way. We have identified three broad typologies which shed light on how businesses are approaching and taking forward their people strategies, as they embark on transforming the productivity of their people. We fundamentally believe that the new approaches that challenge traditional thinking and practices will not only benefit the businesses adopting them, but also the way the sector is perceived as a career choice and as a critical driver of growth to the UK economy.Simon Tarr, Chief Executive, People 1st
Activity: Taking in consideration the background provided you are required to write a magazine article with the title “The key challenges and obstacles facing hospitality leaders and managers in terms of talent management”. Within this article you will consider reviewing relevant management and leadership theory, exploring factors influencing the management styles in hospitality context and assessing management and leadership skills and their applicability in hospitality context.
Additional guidance: Engage with classical management theories and application of these theories in hospitality sector context (at least 2 theories). Do not forget to define the concepts you are using/referring to. Consider the complexity of internal business environment. Consider the role of the leader and different leadership styles in accommodation or food and beverages sector and what challenges and obstacles they face in terms of talent management. Use examples while investigating the internal and external factors that influence management styles and structures.  Refer to ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills providing examples from own practice or specific service sector examples found in literature and/or media. Use own experience or examples from literature while referring to future management and leadership skills and talent management. You may adopt a comparative approach to demonstrate managerial and leadership skills and/or management of change. Reference list (written in Harvard referencing style) should be included in the end of the activity. The article will be submitted with the “Student assessment submission and declaration form” that should be placed on the first page of the document.
