Note: your answer does not have to be specific to psychology as a field. Think broadly; psychological principles can apply to many different fields. Week 3 Week 3 is packed full with information about two popular career paths in Psychology. This week we will be discussing clinical and counseling psychology. Our discussion is designed to help students understand why clinical psychology and counseling psychology (along with school psychology) comprise the largest percent of psychology doctoral graduates. According to the American Psychological Association Center for Workforce Studies (2008), 61 percent of students obtaining doctorate degrees in Psychology are in the subfields of clinical, counseling, and school psychology. The motivating factor for pursuing training and education in these subfields is a desire to help individuals. Clinical, Counseling, and School Psychology are fields, which provide the specialized skills and training needed to help individuals who are coping with mental illness, emotional or behavioral challenges, and a host of psychological issues. Let’s review what a Clinical and Counseling Psychologist do. We will discuss the areas of employment and opportunities available to both and how they differ in training and specialized skills. Clinical Psychology is a broader branch of psychology, than Counseling Psychology. The focus of a Clinical Psychologist is the diagnosis and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They assist individuals with dealing with some of the most common disorders, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and eating disorders. You may be wondering if clinical and counseling psychologists perform the same tasks? Let’s examine this question together. Clinical psychology combines science, theory, along with practice to provide explanations and understanding to predict and address psychological problems and the accompanying distress. The main objective is to promote healthy human development and well-being. Counseling psychologists have a similar objective of working to alleviate or reduce distress associated with emotional or behavioral difficulties caused by psychological problems. A major difference between clinical and counseling psychologists is that counseling psychology’s focus is on assisting individuals improve their well-being throughout their lifespan. Their attention is centered on emotional, social, vocational, developmental, organizational, and health concerns. The ways Clinical psychologists endeavor to assist people is by attempting to reduce distress and provide assistance to improve their emotional and psychological functioning. The assistance is provided in a by variety of activities, such as assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Additionally, clinical psychologists participate in consultations and conduct research, with the objective of better understanding human behavior. When we consider Counseling psychologists, they are also concerned and involved in reducing distress and providing assistance to improve individuals emotional and psychological functioning. However; their focus encompasses the entire lifespan, which includes emotional, social, vocational, health-related, developmental, and organizational matters. They are more interested in the following: (a)normal functioning and not severely disturbed functioning, (b) positive mental health, involving the individual’s strengths and assets, (c) limited or brief counseling interventions, (d) emphasizes personal and environmental interactions together and not as separate entities, and (e) highlights educational/career development, along with vocational environments. environments. Clinical and Counseling Psychologists work in a variety of settings. Many of the employment environments overlap and shared by both. The majority of clinical psychologists are in private practice (39%). The next largest employment area is the academic /university setting, which comprises 22%. The remaining areas and their percentages include: hospitals (7%), outpatient and community mental health clinics (6%), medical schools (8%), Veterans Administrative (VA facilities) comprise 3%. A cluster of additional settings, making up 15%, includes correctional/prison facilities, family services, and rehabilitation centers (Norcross, Karpiak,

Forecasting Tourism (2010 Competition, Part I) Don’t use plagiarized sources. Get Your Custom Essay on Forecasting tourism (2010 competition, part i) Just from $13/Page Order Essay Background Tourism is one of the most rapidly growing global industries and tourism forecasting is becoming an increasingly important activity in planning and managing the industry (from kaggle.com). Problem Description The 2010 tourism forecasting competition had two parts. In part I, competitors were tasked with producing forecasts for the next four years, given 518 series of annual tourism data. Available Data The data consist of 518 annual series, each related to some (undisclosed) tourism activity. Tourism activities include inbound tourism numbers to one country from another country, visitor nights in a particular country, tourism expenditure, etc. The series differ in length, ranging from 7-year series to 43-year series. They also differ in the order of magnitude of values. The data are available at www.kaggle.com/c/tourism1/Data (download the file “tourism_data.csv”) Assignment Goals his case will give you experience with forecasting a large number of series. While the competition goal was to achieve the highest predictive accuracy, the goal of this case is to highlight different aspects of the forecasting process that pertain to forecasting a large number of series. For example, easy-to-use visualization tools have a significant advantage for visualizing a large number of series. Note that the multiple series in this case are not likely to be forecasted together. However, it is common to forecast the demand for a large number of series, such as products in a supermarket chain. Another aspect of this case is the use of different predictive measures, and handling practical issues such as zero counts and summarizing forecast accuracy across series. The assignment provides guidelines for walking you through the forecasting process. Remember that the purpose is not winning the (already completed) contest, but rather learning how to approach forecasting of a large number of series. Assignment 1. Plot all the series (an advanced data visualization tool is recommended) – what type of components are visible? Are the series similar or different? Check for problems such as missing values and possible errors. 2. Partition the series into training and validation, so that the last 4 years are in the validation period for each series. What is the logic of such a partitioning? What is the disadvantage? 3. Generate naive forecasts for all series for the validation period. For each series, create forecasts with horizons of 1,2,3, and 4 years ahead ( , and ). 4. Among the measures MAE, Average error, MAPE and RMSE, which are suitable if we plan to combine the results for the 518 series? 5. For each series, compute MAPE of the naive forecasts once for the training period and once for the validation period. 6. The performance measure used in the competition is Mean Absolute Scaled Error (MASE). Explain the advantage of MASE and compute the training and validation MASE for the naive forecasts. 7. Create a scatterplot of the MAPE pairs, with the training MAPE on the x-axis and the validation MAPE on the y-axis. Create a similar scatter plot for validation MASE vs. MAPE. Now examine both plots. What do we learn? How does performance differ between the training and validation periods? How does performance range across series? 8. The competition winner, Lee Baker, used an ensemble of three methods: ∎ Naive forecasts multiplied by a constant trend (global/local trend: “globally tourism has grown “at a rate of 6% annually.”) ∎ Linear regression ∎ Exponentially-weighted linear regression (a) Write the exact formula used for generating the first method, in the form (b) What is the rational behind multiplying the naive forecasts by a constant? (c) What should be the dependent variable and the predictors in a linear regression model for these data? Explain. (d) Fit the linear regression model to the first five series and compute forecast errors for the validation period. (e) Before choosing a linear regression, the winner described the following process “I examined fitting a polynomial line to the data and using the line to predict future values. I tried using first through fifth order polynomials to find that the lowest MASE was obtained using a first order polynomial (simple regression line). This best fit line was used to predict future values. I also kept the [R2 ] value of the fit for use in blending the results of the predictor.” What are two flaws in this approach? (f) If we were to consider exponential smoothing, what particular type(s) of exponential smoothing are reasonable candidates? (g) The winner concludes with possible improvements, one being “an investigation into how to come up with a blending [=ensemble] method that doesn

Get Your Custom Essay on leadership and trust in team collaboration Just from $13/Page Order Essay Perhaps the best predictor of team success is its clarity of purpose and the team’s commitment to achieving it. To support that purpose, a team needs a process that moves smoothly from vision and mission to goals and tasks in order to achieve the desired outcomes. The foundation of both purpose and process is leadership. Show Less Any form of collaboration is an inherently human process. The culture of an organization can dramatically affect team efficacy and performance. The glue that holds teams together is trust. Three factors can help build trust in collaborative environments: performance and competence, integrity, and concern for the well-being of others. “There is a need for nursing leaders to provide inspiration, mentorship, and direction, whether it be for a patient or the profession” (Mahoney, 2001, p. 269). Mahoney’s point is that leaders are needed at all levels, all functions, and all specialties of nursing. Leadership skills are especially important when guiding or facilitating a team. Show Less But what makes a skilled leader? Aranda, Aranda, and Conlon (1998) suggest that five elements are critical: sharing an inspired vision, challenging team processes, modeling effective team behaviors, empowering team members, and encouraging the heart (pp. 45–46). Leaders must deal with conflict, decision making, and goal achievement. In health care today, there are more teams (including virtual teams) of multidisciplinary professionals than ever before. To lead these teams effectively and successfully, the roles and responsibilities of each team member need to be clearly defined, along with clear descriptions of how the team will make decisions. Trust is an important factor in multidisciplinary team collaboration as well, and it is measured in terms of reliability and communication. A competent and effective leader knows how to build trust across boundaries (geographic, cultural, gender, age, et cetera) to tap the skills and talents of each team member, resulting in team success.
